Assistant Professor in New Media and Learning

Northwestern University’s School of Education and Social Policy (SESP) seeks a tenure-track assistant professor to contribute to research and teaching in the Learning Sciences Program. Northwestern’s Learning Sciences program, founded in 1992, was the first graduate program in learning sciences and has played a leadership role in graduate training and research in the field. We seek a new faculty member to join an active research community investigating issues of new media and learning.

New digital, information, and communication media are reorganizing how people work, learn, play, and participate in civic and political life. We are looking for a scholar who conducts research on new media and learning. Research areas might address, but are not limited to: the study of new media experiences that have the potential or already exhibit influences on learning and development; design, evaluation and assessment of innovative instructional practices and technologies; how experiences with digital media are related to identity and cultural practices of diverse learners; the use of media to organize social relationships and learning that transcend traditional boundaries (e.g., boundaries of institutions, social groups and nations); and research on social inequality and/or the cultural and political implications of digital technologies.

Candidates with a Ph.D. in learning sciences, education, and other social-science disciplines engaged in the study of new media and learning are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will be a cutting edge qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods scholar who is actively developing innovative methods to research new media environments. Teaching and advising responsibilities will include doctoral and masters students in Learning Sciences, as well as teaching courses in the SESP’s undergraduate and teacher preparation programs.
